The Department of Visual Arts is accepting submissions for the 2024 Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition from March 11 - March 21, 2024
 

Eligibility

This exhibition is open to currently enrolled at UL Lafayette Students with a declared major or minor in Visual Arts or Art, regardless of where they are in the program, an opportunity for their creative efforts to be recognized. All Visual Arts/Art Education majors and minors are encouraged to submit. Any original artwork may be submitted, whether a class project or completed independently. All media is accepted. Work must be produced within the last two calendar years. Each student may submit three works with $20 fee. One image per entry – no details or multiple views. The Juror will request additional images of 3-D works if needed.

John Hitchcock is an Artist, Professor of Art and Associate Dean of Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Professor Hitchcock has served as Faculty Director of The Studio Learning Community and Art Department Graduate Chair. He has taught printmaking at UW-Madison since 2001. Prior to that he was at the University of Minnesota, Morris. He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Texas Tech University.

Hitchcock is an award-winning artist who uses the print medium with its long history of commenting on social and political issues to explore his relationships to community, land, and culture. Hitchcock’s artwork consists of abstract representations, mythological hybrid creatures (buffalo, Owl, horse, deer) and military weaponry (tanks, bombs and helicopters). His artworks are based on his childhood memories and stories of growing up in the Wichita Mountains of Oklahoma on Comanche Tribal lands next to the US field artillery military base Ft Sill. Many of the images are interpretations of stories told by his Kiowa/Comanche grandparents and abstract representations influenced by beadwork, land, and culture.

Hitchcock has been the recipient of The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Artistic Innovation and Collaboration grant, New York; Jerome Foundation Grant, Minnesota; the Creative Arts Award, Emily Mead Baldwin Award in the Creative Arts and the Kellett Mid-Career Award at the University of Wisconsin. Hitchcock’s artwork has been exhibited at numerous venues including the International Print Center New York, New York; Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico; Museum of Wisconsin Arts, West Bend, Wisconsin; The Rauschenberg Project Space, New York, New York; “Air, Land, Seed” on the occasion of the Venice Biennale 54th International Art at the University of Ca' Foscari, Venice, Italy. Solo exhibition includes the American Culture Center in Shanghai, Shanghai, China; Portland Art Museum, Portland, Oregon; Missoula Art Museum, Missoula, Montana; Mulvane Art Museum, Topeka, Kansas; Plains Art Museum, Fargo, North Dakota, The Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico; American Indian Community House Gallery, New York, New York; North Dakota Museum of Art, Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Awards

Award winners will be selected by the juror. Awards will be announced and presented at the opening reception Awards include Best of Show - $200, Second Place - $150 and Third Place - $100. Awards will be selected by the juror and will be based off the following criteria of originality, creativity, and the technical skill by the student artist. One or more Honorable Mentions will also be selected, without a prize.

Notification

All participants will be notified by email when the adjudication process has been completed.

Dates/Schedule of Events

January 10 – Call for entries goes out, entry forms and fees accepted online
February 26 – Online Submission Deadline (midnight)
February 27 – March 1 Jurying Process
March 1 – Notification of acceptance
March 4 – 6 Work Drop off between 9-4pm in the Fletcher Hall Gallery
March 7 & 8 - Install of Exhibition 
March 12 – Opening Reception 6:00-8:00 in the Fletcher Hall Gallery. 
March 22 – Work must be picked up from the Fletcher Hall Gallery between 8 AM – 12:30 PM.

Presentation & Installation

All entries must have a completed entry label attached to the back or base and be display ready at the time of submission. Students are responsible for the presentation of their entries and are asked to make the most professional presentation possible. Professionally presented works have a greater chance of acceptance; works submitted in ill-fitting or poorly crafted frames, mats or mounts may not be accepted. Please confer with your major/minor professor(s) for guidance.

 

Works on Paper: Framed works, securely fitted with picture cord or wire are preferred. Unframed works should be presented with a neutral white window mat and/ or mounted on a foam board backing and covered with plexiglas where appropriate. No color mats or glass will be accepted. Unframed or loose works accepted for exhibition must be accompanied by a method of installation using the most appropriate means available.

 

Works on Canvas: Framed paintings mounted on stretcher bars are preferred. Unframed paintings on canvas should be mounted on stretcher bars where possible; otherwise, they should have visible means for hanging.

 

Large-Scale Works: Works 30" or larger in any direction may be presented without frame, window mat or backing board. Large-scale works must have the visible means and precise instructions for hanging.

 

3-D Works:  3-D works accepted for inclusion will be displayed on a pedestal or on the floor, as deemed appropriate.

 

Time-Based Media:  All time-based entries, such as animations or videos, may be submitted on a flash drive or and must be formatted to play on the computer in the Fletcher Hall Gallery Accepted time-based works will be displayed on a continuous loop during open hours.

 

By entering this competition, students agree to be bound by these guidelines; failure to do so will result in disqualification and forfeiture of entry fees. It is the student’s responsibility to submit, make ready for presentation and collect art works at the appointed times. The Juror will select works for inclusion; however, the Dean of the College may remove works that he deems unsuitable. The decisions of the Juror and/or the Dean of the College are final.
